Fire Service Visit

3rd Mar 2025

Oisín's  daddy Kevin is a fireman and he came to school to tell about his job with his colleague also called Kevin.  They explained how we can identify their uniform with the fire service crest and colours.  Kevin has lots of parts to his uniform as it protects him when he is dealing with an emergency situation, special gloves & boots.  He has to respond to fires, help people who have been in an accident and to rescue animals who are stuck to name but a few.  They have to keep fit as the uniform is very heavy and they has to climb ladders while carrying hoses or cutters.

We looked at the different parts of their uniform and then we got to go outside and look closely at the fire engine.  They sounded the sirens so we knew that we had to stand back and let them get by so they could quickly respond to the call out.  They showed us the hoses and then sprayed the wall so we could see the power of the water.  We said we needed the children to know their address as if they have to call for help they would need to tell the operator.  Tonight look at the number on your front door and help your child learn their address.

Kevin H said that the most important thing was a smoke alarm as it will warn us if their is smoke in the house. So don't forget to check it is working and as a family make a plan if you ever need to evacuate your home - have an assembly point outside to meet.  And once out STAY OUT!
