Getting Ready to Learn Session

3rd Apr 2018

We discussed the importance of early reading, this may be a story before bedtime, helping you read the care instructions on their clothes – finding the matching number on the washing machine or even a catalogue and how we can encourage the children to identify signs and symbols when out and about - road signs, how many miles to Crossgar.  The parents chatted about questions their children ask and we explored how we can go to the library to get information books or watch YouTube clips to expand their understanding.

We looked at some of the resources available to send home and how the children love to explore with the shape finders - looking for shapes in everyday objects and tape measures to explore their understanding of measurements in play.  One of the most popular areas in the Nursery is the bug area and the children carefully bring bugs to the microscope to look in greater detail at the sections of the bug.  So we have an information book on mini beasts, a magnifying glass and a chart to record what they find in the garden.

We looked at the everyday activities that encourage the children to explore their fine and gross motor skills – dressing themselves, mixing baking ingredients, spreading the butter on their toast, pouring a drink and helping to tidy their rooms.  The visits to the park and walks that develop their coordination, climbing skills and confidence.  All these activities will support them as they move to the Primary School.
