Today Suzanne & Andy visited the Nursery to talk to us about how they help in the community as part of the topic ‘People Who Help Us’. They spoke to the children about the importance of wearing their seatbelt, using their booster seats and Strange Danger. We discussed that if someone we didn’t know offered us sweets or to go and see a puppy that they should shout Stranger Danger to get help.
We looked at their uniform, they have a crest just like us that has a shamrock on it and their uniform is green. They have hi-viz jackets to help us find them and we saw the word police on the car.
They explained how they work together with the fire and ambulance service to help people stay safe. They have radios to communicate and work together to help cars that have been in an accident, someone who is lost or someone times they have to arrest people who don’t do the right thing - Miss Donoghue pretended that she had stolen all the Easter eggs from Asda and not paid so they arrested her and used handcuff - she had a chat with the police and said she wouldn't do it again and thankfully they let her go.
They had to carry lots of equipment and their vests are VERY heavy - we used our muscles to see if we could lift them. They have a torch to guide the traffic - Suzanne showed us how she moves it in a circle then uses her hand to say STOP to help manage the accident and keep us away from danger. Andy explained he uses the stick to maybe break a window to help someone trapped in a car or building. While they have special tools they talk to people to help them have a think about how they can do the right thing.
We went outside to see the police car, we heard the siren, saw the flashing lights and talked about how these signs help us to get out of the way to let the police, ambulance or fire service get quickly to the people who need help.
We got to sit in the police car so we know its not scary if we get lost and they could take us home.
The children have been learning that we can call 999 to get help from the police, fire or ambulance service and that we have to learn our address so they know how to find us.
HOMEWORK - can you help your children learn their address - number on the door and street name.
